POT is shorthand for "Potential" - an attribute of all players that is used to calculate how high a players attributes can get.
Changes in a player's Potential attribute
-A draftee with a con of 75+ and a pot of 40 - 69 can get a pot boost if signed under 20 years of age.
For instance a pot 6 player with 75+ con if signed either in the 2-3 days directly after the draft or the next season (you should be able to time it around draft time) can get a pot boost. Its even possible for pot 4 and 5 guys to get pot ups all the way to 7.
-A draftee with a con of 10 - 50 and of any pot (usually 70+) can get a pot decrease if signed before the age of 20.
NEVER sign a guy with con less than 50 until he is 20! I for one didnt know this till quite recently and have fallen victim. Their pot can drop sometimes up to 3 or 4 points!
-Goalies can not get the before mentioned increases or decreases.

The last number in a goalies pot DOES affect his overall ratings.
A pot 78 goalie should develop most his stats to around 78. Where as a pot 70 goalie will only develop his stats to around 70. Ceilings have NO influence on goalies. However I have read height and weight do.
