Firstly, congratulations to Pittsburgh on winning the GHL Cup! Great job with that - that's an incredibly tough-to-beat team there. Great job with them, John.
However, the league has spoken and another GM was considered to be the GM of the Year...
Congratulations to Alex Lebas for the job you did with Carolina this season and on being the GM of the Year for 2015-2016! John (PIT) and Josh (LA) came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
Coming up, Will Smith and Neil Patrick Harris will announce the winner of the Robert Alarie Trophy for the league's top defensive forward...
Turns out Will Smith and Neil Patrick Harris are on location filming a sequel to "Wild, Wild West" and couldn't make it. And yet their names still showed up on my teleprompter.
I would have our league commissioner come up and announce something but he's either still drunk from celebrating actually making it into the playoffs or he's having motherboard issues. Probably a little from column A and a little from column B...
So...the Robert Alarie Trophy...the league's best defensive forward is...from the Florida Panthers, Jimmy Hayes! Hayes is now the first sole winner of this award as we had a tie in our first year. Lucic was 2nd followed by Logan Couture.
And now, the Vit Rejda Trophy. This one goes to the player judged to be the best rookie in the league...
And the winner is Leon Draisaitl of the New York Islanders! This was a relative landslide as he was well ahead of runner-up Brendan Shinnimin and 3rd place finisher Rasmus Tirronen.
And now, the first really interesting voting result, the Patrick Chelios Trophy awarded to the league's top defenseman...
The winner actually got fewer total votes than the 2nd and 3rd place finishers - he did it by being the top guy on the ballots on which he was named in all but one case. The 3rd place finisher actually was named on the most ballots. So..interesting at the very least. "Not thrilling...but nice" (name the movie for 200 internet points).
And the winner of the Patrick Chelios Trophy is...Tampa Bay's Victor Hedman! Followed closely by Kris Letang and then Erik Karlsson.
And now, we get to announce the league's top goaltender (or "goalkeeper" in the soccer vernacular). This is the Paul Bolduc Trophy - someone our Anaheim GM remembers fondly...
The winner is, by a nearly unanimous decision...Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins! Jonathan Quick was a not-so-close runner-up and Jonathan Bernier was and even-less-close 3rd place finisher. Even combining the Jonathans' points wouldn't have surpassed Fleury's dominance in this one.
And now we get to the big one. The league's MVP - the Alfred Cederberg Trophy...
Apparently, even having a teammate in the running couldn't stop this guy. the same could be said about the league defenses - this guy had a fantastic season and is a deserved winner, for certain.
The Oilers had two players voted into the top 3. But the winner of the Alfred Cederberg Trophy is...Edmonton's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins! Teammate Taylor Hall finished 2nd followed by Steven Stamkos.
Congratulations to all the award winners and thank you to the guys that voted. This is impossible without your input.
