Rangers Dealing Like It's Deadline-Day
The New York Rangers, after being relatively silent for much of the season, busted out with 3 trades in just a couple of days drastically altering the face of the team.
The first deal sent top-line forwards Rick Nash and Derick Brassard to Dallas in exchange for Jonas Brodin and Lars Eller. Then they shipped top defenseman Marc Staal to Vancouver for Ondrej Palat and Calvin de Haan. The trading then ended (or did it?) with Kevin Klein and farmhand Adam Tambellini going to Calgary for Ladislav Smid and Max Reinhart. Draft picks were also involved in those last two.
To summarize...
OUT:
IN:
What did they give up? They gave up 2/3 of an excellent 1st line and a top-pairing defenseman. The rest is just fluff as far as the Rangers are concerned - though those players likely have more value for the teams they left for.
What did they get? For one, they got a little younger. They also got this:
All in all, the Rangers are likely a slightly weaker team for the rest of the season as they didn't get a Nash-level player back. But they should still be a playoff team and better setup for future seasons.
And who knows, the team might still have a few tricks up it's sleeve with plenty of time before the real trade deadline. There'll be time enough fer countin', when the dealin's done.

What did they get? For one, they got a little younger. They also got this:
- Brodin should be a top defenseman for many seasons. He's young and already solid all-around. He largely makes up for the loss of Staal and will be around longer.
- Palat is an excellent offensive winger. He's not quite Rick Nash but he can certainly play on the top line and be very productive if given a good opportunity in spite of the weak numbers we've seen so far.
- Eller is a solid 2-way forward who isn't afraid to hit. He's not going to put up numbers like Brassard but he could be as valuable in other ways.
- Smid is the oldest of the players joining the team and is an excellent defender in front of his own goal. We feel this might be an upgrade over Klein even though Klein is more versatile and well-rounded.
- de Haan is still young and should be a solid 3rd pairing guy for several seasons.
- Reinhart is a role player who could develop a bit more into a decent all-around player for the 3rd or 4th line.
- Dallas's 1st rounder is after next season so it's hard to say how valuable it will be.
