The inaugural season of the new GHL was a rocky one for the New York Rangers.
It started with them trading away some key figures in Henrik Lundqvist, Mats Zuccarello, and Marty St. Louis. However, they were able to use the deals to make room for younger players like Jesper Fast and Chris Kreider as well as newly acquired Jaden Schwartz. Furthermore, it clarified the goaltending situation as Cam Talbot was immediately the #1 goalie on the team.
The team enjoyed some success early on with the forwards on the top line of Rick Nash-Jaden Schwartz-Derek Stepan all finding themselves among the league's scoring leaders. However, in the second half the line fizzled. Though the 2nd line stepped up a bit, it wasn't enough to keep them among the top teams and they fell to 7th in the conference. They might've fallen even further if not for their strong defense.
In the playoffs, the team surprised many by defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in 7 games. The home team won each game going into Game 7 and so the Rangers needed the Law of Averages to favor them - and it did. But the 2nd round saw them facing the Penguins - a top notch offensive AND defensive team - and they bowed out in 5 games.
Given the strong start, the season and playoffs could be considered highly disappointing. But given the weak 2nd half, the Playoffs had to be at least a bit encouraging.
