Having tossed hockey wizard Dean Lombardi to the curb after one year out of the playoffs, the Los Angeles Kings have hired Josh Lewis as their new general manager.
Despite being just 28, Lewis has plenty of experience as an NHL general manager, having helmed the Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues and most recently the Columbus Blue Jackets. He also had a long stint abroad with the Minsk Wolves.
Lewis is known as someone with plenty of expertise in rebuilding a team, with an excellent eye for young talent, and an ability to stockpile assets and then use them as trade chips. However, his critics point out that he has yet to take one of his teams to the Stanley Cup, having reached the conference final with the Flyers and Wild.
And so the Kings have taken a leap of faith in asking Lewis to take them to the promised land for the third time this decade. However, he already has an idea of what needs to be done to the roster.
"We have the big-name players, but we don't have enough substance. My teams have always been good defensively, and that means the defencemen and the forwards. This club certainly has lots of offence, but we need more two-way players. We need grinders. We need stay-at-home guys. We need the guy who made the players file to wake up and give Slava Voynov more than 73 DF.
"The cornerstones are certainly in place with the likes of Kopitar, Brown, Doughty and Quick. There's also a fair bit of young talent, led by Tyler Toffoli. What I'll do is tinker with the rest of the lineup. I promise you this: our teams will be at or near the bottom in goals allowed."
