There's a soccer starting lineup challenge going around where you pick only from players who played while you have been alive and no two players can be from the same country or have ever played for the same club (even if they didn't play together). It's a fun challenge, so I adapted it to hockey and came up with this lineup:
Ovechkin - Kopitar - Selanne Lidstrom - Chara Brodeur
I should note that I kept an eye on all pro teams, not just NHL, and I based it on which country or countries they played for not where they were born (so Rod Langway counts as American, not Taiwanese, and picking Peter Stastny means you can't have any other Slovak or Canadian players, though Czech Rep players would be a grey area)
Figured since you're all hockey people that you might be interested in trying something like this. I will warn you though, the number of really good non-Canadian players who spent some time in Detroit and/or Colorado is really annoying.

I am old enough to select Lemieux Jagr played for so many teams, spoiled everything So many one-team players have to be chosen Tarasenko over Makarov (don't remember him) Barkov (FLA) - M.Lemieux (PIT) - Tarasenko (STL) Leetch (NYR, TOR, BOS) - Hedman (TB) Hasek (BUF, DET, OTT)

Let it be Lehtinen then Someone have to win Selke

Let it be Lehtinen then Someone have to win Selke That's a very good question - I went with which country/countries they played for as opposed to their official nationality/nationalities, so by my method I think you could use both Barkov and Tarasenko (since Barkov hasn't played for Russia, as far as I know?) I had been trying to build from Hasek but it didn't seem worth it to take him and lose out on Lidstrom (similarly I thought about going for Roy but then I'd lose Selanne). My decision not to take Lemieux was entirely because I left the Canadian for last and couldn't find a goalie that fit (I did consider swapping Kopitar/Brodeur for Lemieux/Kolzig though)

As a first choosing you took the best Finnish, Swedish and arguably Russian and two of them played for one team:) Cheater I am just kidding ! Checked hdboards: hf voting considers Selanne Lidstrom and Ovechkin the best in theirs nationalities I was right

Did I make a mistake, I didn't think any of the 6 I grabbed had played for the same team? Haha, ya, the problem with doing it for hockey vs the soccer version is fewer countries, teams, and positions, so it's easy for everyone to end up with a similar team. It would be cool to do it as a draft where no player could be picked for more than one team, but I didn't even consider that idea. Would make it crazy hard, that's for sure.

Ohhh, ya, gotcha. I definitely found, doing the soccer one, that picking players who only played for one team was vital for overall team strength. It's a bit different in hockey, but you take someone like Jagr and you lose half the league!

interesting to think what team would win as much as I love Brodeur and NJ, I would say Hasek is equal to Marty I would also say Chara equal to Hedman Lemieux >>> Kopitar Lidstrom >> Leetch but your wingers are better so ... only if Mario scores very many
