New Los Angeles Kings general manager Josh Lewis has been busy since his hiring, but he recently made his biggest splash yet with the acquisition of left winger James van Riemsdyk from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
van Riemsdyk is widely considered to be a superstar in the making. Pro scouts note that he has an explosive shot and is equally skilled as a playmaker, with great hands. He also has a solid defensive game.
The Kings paid a hefty price to get him, sending emerging star Jiri Tlusty to the Leafs, along with their first round pick this year and two 2nds, and prospects Scott Sabourin and Kevin Gravel.
"As soon as we found out JVR was available, we were all over it. This guy will be the best left winger in the game. As it stands now he'll be a big part of our top six, but he hasn't even come close to his ceiling yet," said Lewis.
The New Jersey native had 30 goals and 61 points last year.
Tlusty had just been acquired from the Winnipeg Jets for left winger Tanner Pearson and prospect Spencer Watson. Like van Riemsdyk, he is believed to have untapped potential, although he doesn't have the same upside.
Sabourin, 21, was undrafted and is coming off his first season in the AHL. He is expected to develop into a top six winger. Gravel, 22, was the Kings' fifth round pick in 2010 and is projected as a strong stay-at-home defenceman.
