BREAKING: Atlanta Thrashers Win Second GHL Cup!
This may come as a surprise, even to the team and coaches in the Thrashers locker room -- after a very good, albeit underwhelming regular season based on expectations, and absolute dog-fights against Toronto and Ottawa, your Atlanta Thrashers swept the Cup Series against Detroit in four games, giving their fans a raucous summer celebration right down Peachtree Street. No vendors had time to close, as the expectation was even up 3-0, that the Thrashers may be headed back to Detroit. Luckily, fans were jubilant, if not experienced, in celebrating their favorite team.
"This is unreal. I'm 72 years old and I've seen two GHL Cup wins in my lifetime. I never thought this could be possible, especially with all the news the team was potentially headed to Winnipeg. I'm so happy ownership shot this down -- Atlanta loves this team and...hey I lost my train of thought!" Indicated Leonard Cohen as another fan high-fived him as he was walking by.
Another familiar face in the crowd was Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Matt Ryan, celebrating with some of his teammates. "While I may be from the Philadelphia area, I've grown to love this team, its ownership, and its players. Nothing makes me happier than celebrating this with this city!" Ryan and his teammates were whisked away to a private alcove with the hockey team shortly thereafter.
"I hesitate to use the word surprised, but this certainly was unexpected. We expected a tough series against Detroit -- many pegged them as the top team in the league" noted Head Coach Gerry Meehan. "I can tell you that hockey can be a funny game; something clicked in our first game in Detroit where we thought we could hang with them. To be frank, we thought it would be tough to win in their building. Squeaking out that first win gave us such confidence, and we never looked back."
Team Captain Steven Stamkos closed out the media session on a thoughtful note -- "I have to thank my teammates and coaches. Without them, this wouldn't be possible! When Getz (Former Captain Ryan Getzlaf) retired, he told me to take every day as a gift and put in the work with the team to build to this point. He couldn't have been more right!" the captain exclaimed.
Could Atlanta be back in the finals next year? Only time will tell. The East continues to get stronger, but teams are already looking towards next year and the 2022 season!
