There is definitely a different feeling in St. Louis since the turn of the New Year. Going back to the beginning of January, The Blues have gone 7-3-0, and have pushed themselves into the 8th seed of the Western Conference. Although head coach Ron Low still believes they can get better, Low has been happy with the recent results. After the team's most recent 4-3 win over the Flames, he went on to say, "We've been playing really good hockey recently. I'm happy with the way the team is coming together. Finally it looks as though there is some cohesion out there. Our power play has been phenomenal over the stretch of this month." Low isn't lying either. Heading into the month, the Blues' power play was sitting in the bottom half of the league. Currently it's clicking at 23.20%, which is good enough for 3rd in the GHL.
Last time we talked to GM R.J. Ryan, he showed some concern over the play of some veterans. It sounds like they were listening. Jamie Benn has put up 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists), and had this to say: "Our GM was right. On a team that's in our position, a transition, the veterans are going need to to lead the charge. I've felt much better about my play recently, and thankfully it's helped this team turn things around." Ryan commented that it's crucial to keep things going the way they have been if they want to make the playoffs. "Consistency is key. Hockey is the ultimate team game. If we want to keep winning, then everyone needs to pull their own weight. I'm happy with the way things have gone, and I'm hoping that it continues this way."
Ryan was also made aware of comments made by Atlanta GM Joe Papp. Continuing the heated rivalry between the two general managers, Ryan blasted the Thrashers GM. "Papp is the kind of guy that will try to make himself look like the innocent victim in a situation like this. But he's not. He won't show you that in public. You should see some of the explicit text messages he's sent me. You know how Kim Kardashian likes to gain attention by taking nude selfies? I've received a few of those with Papp posing with the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, he doesn't have her body and it's just disrespectful to be treating the trophy we all pour our blood and sweat into in order to win. Saying that we are trying to copy their style of play? Is he actually taking credit for hard nosed, physical hockey? That style of play has been around since the 70s. He's so delusional."
The Blues look to continue their recent hot streak with games against Vancouver, Nashville, Buffalo, and New Jersey.
